Donn Fink, Dave Buckley, Joel Hellberg, Mallory McDowell, and the
Harrison Cheerleaders all volunteered their time to play under the
Entertainment Tent on Saturday. Donn Fink is a local business owner
(Snug Haven Lakeside Resort on Budd Lake) who also performs as a DJ and
solo singer/musician at a variety of mid-Michigan locations. Dave
Buckley, a longtime friend and collaborator with Donn, is the Music
Director for the Scottville Clown Band. He and Donn occasionally perform
as a duo at local venues, with Donn on guitar and Dave on sax. Both have
a broad repertoire of music spanning from the big band and jazz sounds
of the 30s, to classic and contemporary country, to pop and rock and
roll. Joel Hellberg is the Music Director for Harrison Community
Schools. He performs locally as a country singer/musician. Mallory
McDowell of Clare is just 10 years old and sings country songs with the
power and confidence of someone at least twice her age. Finally, both
the Harrison Varsity and the Harrison Mini Camp Cheerleaders performed
routines for the crowd under the direction of Harrison Cheerleading
Coach, Tammy Carlstrom.
The only paid entertainment was provided by the Scottville Clown Band,
who took the stage after “the shortest parade, ever!” on Sunday
afternoon. The band consists of approximately 200 musicians who perform
about 60 concerts per year to raise money for musical scholarships.
Twenty-four band members performed in the Entertainment Tent, playing a
variety of types of music from a number of different eras. Their concert
was punctuated by several audience participation songs and lots of
humorous anecdotes.
The Clown Band concert was free to the hundreds of people who came out
to see them. The entire cost of the Clown Band was underwritten by
several mid-Michigan groups and physicians. Drs. Ware, Binsfield and
Yacisen make up the medical team at Mid Michigan Bone and Joint. All
three are orthopedic and sports medicine specialists who practice out of
offices in Clare and Alma and perform surgery at the Mid-Michigan
Medical Center in Clare. The Mid-Michigan Medical Center, also a Clown
Band sponsor, is a nationally recognized hospital, having just been
named one of the Thompson 100 Top Hospitals in the country based on the
excellent care provided there. Harrison’s own Mid Michigan Physicians
Group, Dr. Achin and Dr. Nicholson, also helped to pay the bill for the
Clown Band. Dr. Achin specializes in internal medicine and Dr. Nicholson
handles family practice and obstetrics. PAs Tony Santini and Diane Grove
complete the medical team at the local Mid-Michigan office here in
Harrison on Business 127 just north of the expressway. Great Lakes
Surgical Associates is comprised of surgeons Dr. Smith and Dr. Cudjoe,
specialists in laparoscopic, endoscopic and bariatric surgery. Finally,
the Michigan Cardio/Vascular Institute (MCVI) offers a total range of
cardio services to local residents out of their offices in Clare,
Gladwin, Houghton Lake and Mt. Pleasant. MCVI is a team of more than 200
people dedicated to improving the quality of life for patients with
cardiovascular-related health problems. They are the largest
cardiovascular service provider north of Detroit and one of the largest
in the Midwest. That size allows MCVI to offer a level of skill,
technology and service unique to this region, and they offer this in 21
locations throughout a 22-county service area. Together, these five
sponsors remind us that quality medical car is just a short drive away,
right here in Clare County.
Nearly 50 vendors set up on the grass to
the south of the Surrey House to sell items, distribute information, and
provide service to the thousands of visitors who walked through the
vendor area on Saturday. Items available for sale covered a wide range
of possibilities: brightly colored wood birdhouses, stone birdhouses and
benches, scrolled woodwork, wool knit gloves and hats, hand loomed rugs,
bead and glass jewelry, lawn ornaments, photography, wood art, homemade
local maple syrup products, sewed and crocheted items, signs, handbags,
cell phones and more. Also present were a variety of groups there to
publicize their activities. For example, the Budd Lake Area Association
passed out maps of Budd Lake and the “rules of the road” for boaters on
the lake. Several candidates for public office handed out buttons and
other promotional items, and several other civic organizations handed
out information and sold items or raffle tickets to promote their
activities. Nearly everyone indicated an intention to tell other
crafters about how much they enjoyed the Harrison Street Fair AND to
return to Harrison again next year.

Wilson State Park.
